Working with files › Where it goes and in what format · 7 min read
You already know what is inside a file. What is missing is the boring, decisive part: where you put it and what you call it.
That is what separates a folder that serves you for two years from one that turns into a swamp in two months.
The temptation, when somebody decides to "finally get organized", is to make a
PDFs folder, a Word one, an Images one. It is what the head suggests
because it is what you can see about the file: its type.
Do not do it. You will never look for "all my PDFs". You will look for "the Acme stuff", "the March proposal", "the moving paperwork". You search by subject, not by extension.
Everything from one project lives together, whatever the type: the PDF they sent you, the markdown draft, the spreadsheet, the photos. When the project ends, it gets archived whole, in one move.
The exception that proves the rule. Templates do go together by type, because those you do look for by what they are: "the proposal template".
A templates/ folder with the templates inside. They get copied, not edited.

A client sends you an invoice as a PDF. Where does it go?
You will never look for "all my PDFs". You look by subject.
