Working with filesFrom the window to the file · 8 min read

Who does what

There is nothing to install yet, and nothing to memorize. This is just the map: what each piece is, who touches what, and why this way of working loses nothing when you close the window.

If something does not make sense, that is not your problem: keep going. The ideas come back later, already in use.

The 5 stepsall

Five moves that repeat every time you ask for something. Use the arrows.

Five actors with a letter (A–E) and five steps with a number (1–5). They are two different things.

Letter = actor. A piece of the system. Tap any of the five boxes in the drawing to see what it is and what it does.

Number = step. One move of the circuit. Walk through them with the buttons or with the arrow keys.

Notice two things: step 3 is the only one that touches your files, and it has a ceiling — it never leaves the folder you opened. And the circuit closes on you: nothing counts as done until you look at it.

AYoudecides

the only one who knows what needs to happen

You do not need to know how anything is done. You need to know what you want to happen, and to look at whether what happened is right. That is not a small thing: it is the one job none of the other four pieces can do.

BYour computerstores

physical reality — the dashed box on the map

This is where your files actually live, whether the windows are open or closed. Nothing you see on screen is the file: it is a view of the file. The file is on the disk. And notice the AI is drawn outside this box.

CVS Code, the IDEonly shows

the window — it decides nothing

Three zones: the folder tree on the left, the viewer with the open file in the middle, and the AI panel on the right. It is the only piece that neither decides nor stores anything: close it and you lose nothing; delete it and your files are still intact on the disk.

DThe folder and its filesthe result

what is permanent, and the limit

A file is a thing with a name and contents; a folder is a box holding files and other folders. Obvious, except that here it carries new weight: the file is where finished work stays, not the conversation. And this folder is also the boundary of what the AI can see.

EThe AIexecutes

the one doing the work, with permission

The same one you already use in the browser. The difference is not in its head, it is in its hands: here it can open, read, write, rename and move files — inside one folder, and with your approval.

One decides, one executes, and the other three store or show.

Of the five actors, which is the only one none of the others can replace?

Nothing counts as done until you look at it.
